Author Dr. Jonathan Cohen will discuss his new book Losing Big: America's Reckless Bet on Sports Gambling that examines how states, under intense lobbying from the gambling industry, have legalized commercialized sports gambling and created a system built around profit for sportsbooks, not the well-being of citizens. Journalist Emily Washburn of The Daily Citizen will serve as moderator for the event.

About the Participants:

Dr. Jonathan D. Cohen is the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Senior Program Officer for American Institutions, Society, and the Public Good at the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. He is the author of For a Dollar and a Dream: State Lotteries in Modern America as well as the co-editor of Long Walk Home: Reflections on Bruce Springsteen, and All In: The Spread of Gambling in Twentieth-Century United States. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and many other outlets. He lives in New Haven, CT.

Emily Washburn is an investigative journalist for The Daily Citizen where she covers policy and social issues affecting the family and tracks social and ideological trends like the proliferation of online gambling. She also works as an issues analyst for Focus on the Family. She previously reported for Forbes and served on the editorial team at Discourse Magazine.
